Fire broke out at South Korea’s SK Energy refinery complex



According to media reports, a fire broke out at the SK Energy refinery complex in Ulsan, South Korea during the early hours on 12 January 2022, which was put out a couple of hours later. 

The fire started at the battery room energy storage system (ESS) that stores energy and supply to the plant in case of power outages. The flames were contained within the three-story building without spreading to other facilities. 

According to CommoPlast data, SK Energy owns two steam crackers at the same locations, which operating status are unclear at the time of this report. Steam cracker No. 1 has an annual output of 200,000 tons/year of ethylene and cracker No. 2 has an annual output of 660,000 tons/year of ethylene.
