Media: Indonesia rolled back import restrictions to detangle port congestion

According to media reports, about 26,000 containers have been stuck at Indonesia’s two largest ports since the implementation of the controversial import restriction regulations in April

The Indonesian government, on 17 May 2024, decided to change or relax the latest import restrictions on a swathe of products and revert to the previous rules effective immediately. The move aimed to expedite the clearance of imported products that piled up heavily at the ports.

According to media reports, about 26,000 containers have been stuck at Indonesia’s two largest ports since the implementation of the controversial import restriction regulations in April due to bureaucratic processes.

These containers contain a range of goods including steel, electronics, clothes, and chemicals.

The decision offered some relief to the already constrained shipping sector. As reported earlier, global shipping costs are on the rise due to severe vessel and container shortages amid stronger demand from certain sectors.
