The looming 9 April deadline for new US reciprocal tariffs on 60 nations triggered a wave of last-minute shipping, spurred by Washington’s exemption for goods loaded prior to the cutoff date.

The frontloading lent modest support to US-bound lanes, lifting freight rates from Asia to the West and East Coasts by 3% and 5%, respectively. On Asia–West Coast routes, gains were further reinforced by April GRIs and tighter capacity controls, with transpacific carriers implementing blank sailings to stabilise rates.

Elsewhere, however, similar momentum failed to materialise. On Asia–Europe routes, spot rates slid further below 2024’s trough as the seasonal lull dragged on. Meanwhile, caution grew as shippers assessed the possible macroeconomic fallout of the impending US trade restrictions.
