According to media report, several international shipping companies have lifted shipping costs for routes Vietnam to USA, Canada, EU and Australia and vice versa by three digits.
In particular, Hapag-Lloyd lifted the fees by $240 for 20 footer containers and $300 for 40 footers containers for goods export from most Asia countries, including Vietnam to USA and Canada. Cosco and US Lines introduced similar hike on their fees. However, the backhaul route only witness $40 to $100 hike for 20 footer containers and $300 for 40 footers containers.
Shipping costs from Asia to Northern Europe and Mediterranean countries increased $150 for 20 footer containers and $300 for 40 footers containers. Meanwhile, shipping fees to Australia from Asian countries also hike $200-400 for respective type of containers.
Cited a managing director of an international shipping company, the report said that crude oil is just one of the factor affecting pricing, the underlined issues here is that over capacity and faltering demand is corroding profit margins, which might lead to more serious financial issues in the long run.
