Chinese government suspends the publication of provincial economic data

The Chinese government reportedly ordered authorities in Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu to stop producing individual purchasing managers’ index for the manufacturing sector, as the country moves to tighten the control on the dissemination of sensitive economic data.

The provinces, therefore, will not publish PMI data for the month of October, November and thereafter.

Guangdong is a major manufacturing and export hub in China, which has been publishing its own monthly PMI data since November 2011. Companies rely on this data as a key indicator of China’s real economic situation.

The market now has to depend on the central government for these statistics via the National Bureau of Statistics reports.
