The district around the Laem Chabang port in Chonburi province, Thailand have been declared as “danger zone” after a container ship carrying hazardous chemical docked at the port exploded early hours on Saturday that sent thick smoke to the atmosphere.
At least 25 people have been injured and residents have been evacuated.
Forensic police are investigating the cause of the incident.
However, two major PP and PE producers in Thailand have confirmed that the explosion does not affect the outbound shipments from them, but inbound cargoes could face a slight delay.
Laem Chabang port is one of the major deep-sea ports in Thailand, transporting about 7 million containers in 2018. Thailand is putting resources to expand the port to accommodate freight traffic of 18.1 million containers per year once completed.
