Fire hit ExxonMobil’s Baytown olefins complex

According to the official statement from ExxonMobil, a fire occurred at Baytown Olefins Plant early morning Wednesday, 31 July 2019 and injured dozens of people.

ExxonMobil owns multiple crackers at the Baytown complex; with total ethylene output stands at 3.8 million tons/year and 960,000 tons/year of propylene. Among these, the newest ethane crackers went into commercial operation in 2017 that produces 1.5 million tons/year of ethylene.

Exxon said the units affected by the fire process light hydrocarbons including propane and propylene.

It is still unsure on the exact extent of the damage caused by the incident and which units are shut. However, market sources said there is a high possibility that the company’s 755,000 tons/year PP plant on the same might be taken downstream as a result.

Exxon’s crackers in Baytown complex supplies ethylene feeds to the adjacent PE plant in Mont Belvieu. It is unclear at this time if these units are affected.
