The Indian government has extended the nationwide lockdown with effective 4 May 2020 for another two (2) weeks as the country continues to fight the COVID-19 outbreak. At the moment, India recorded more than 40,000 infected cases which claimed at least 1,306 lives.
The Indian government started to lock down the country since 25 March 2020, which restricts inter-state movement and the operations of non-essential businesses.
However, the government begins to relax some restrictions in areas that are further away from the hotspots to ease pressure on the economy. Here are the details of the latest announcement from the government.
Despite the fact that manufacturing sectors in rural areas are allowed to operate at lower rates, many companies find it very difficult to navigate the lockdown. A woven bag manufacturer said, “We only have about 30% of the workforce available. Meanwhile, demand from major cities such as Delhi, Gujarat, and Maharashtra remain very sluggish as these are the hotspot area. We are now facing a major cash flow issue.”
