Beijing announces plans to phase out single-use, non-biodegradable plastics products

The Beijing Municipal has reportedly approved the plans to phase out the use of single-use, non-biodegradable plastics products in the city starting 1 May 2020, according to local media outlets.

The plans consist of three phases spreading throughout 5 years from 2020 to 2025 that aim to reduce pollution in the city. The announcement comes just two months after the Hainan Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment revealed similar measures to reduce the use of single-use plastics products.

In Beijing, starting 1 May 2020, the use of ultra-thin plastic bags will be restricted and residents would face penalties if found flouting the garbage classification rules. By the end of the year, the use of non-biodegradable plastics bags, straws, and tableware will be prohibited.

The authorities expect the consumption of non-degradable disposable plastic tableware in the catering and take-out sector to drop by 30% by 2025. It also required e-commerce, food delivery, and other platforms to publish an action plan and regularly updating the public on the implementation progress in reducing the use of disposable plastic products.
