Explosion occurred at China's Zhongke plant, startup at PP and PE units affected



According to market sources, an explosion has occurred at an Ethylene Oxide (EO) unit belong to Zhongke Refinery and Petrochemical last week that forced the company to suspend the trial operations at the naphtha cracker, PP, and PE units at the same site.

The company was amid trial run at the newly construct plant when the incident happened. All units were initially scheduled to produce commercially by the end of September.

The naphtha cracker has an annual capacity of 1 million tons/year. The company owns two PP lines with a combined output of 550,000 tons/year, a 100,000 tons/year LDPE plant, and a 350,000 tons/year HDPE/LLDPE plant. 

Zhongke is unavailable to comment at the time of this report, however, market players speculated that the complex could take at least a couple of weeks to resume operations.
