The Chinese authorities have ordered the closure of the Dalian container port after a rise in the number of COVID-19 infections linked to a cold storage company here. The port would be shut for three days for sanitization with the possibility of extension, depending on the situation.
Sources said that both importers and exporters are scrambling to look for other options having a heavy inclination that the shutdown would be longer than expected.
“If the port remains shut for too long, it will cause quite a pile-up in end-product inventories. We are rushing out the delivery ahead of the Lunar New Year,” a manufacturer said.
Dalian is a major port in the Northeast China region, having a container throughput of 4.58 million containers during the period from January to October 2020.
“We have to wait and see. If the authorities are able to reopen the port in the next three days, the impact on our shipment would be minor. Otherwise, we have to notice our overseas buyers regarding the delay,” a PP producer added.
