Many Malaysian converters have not been able to resume or normalize operations since the COVID-19 outbreak in the country rages on. On 5 August 2021, Malaysia recorded more than 20,000 new infection cases – the highest number since the pandemic.
Sources said that even with two HDPE plants shutting down for maintenance, buyers remain uninterested in replenishing cargoes. “Demand might only return when the outbreak is under control. At the moment, manufacturers can apply to resume operations, but without a clear guideline from relevant authorities, the constant fear of getting penalized for breaking S.O.P discourages these customers to restart their plants or ramp up operations,” a trader commented.
