Asian petchem sector braces for Iran war impact

The Asian petrochemical market is entering the week under acute geopolitical strain after the latest escalation in the Iran conflict forced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting regional cargo flows, including methanol and PE exports from Iran.

Unlike last year’s brief 12-day confrontation, geopolitical analysts warn the current military exchanges could extend for weeks, significantly tightening energy and chemical supply chains across Asia. The Strait remains a critical artery for Middle Eastern feedstock and polymer shipments, and any sustained blockage would immediately recalibrate regional trade flows.

Spot offers has already thinned. Trading houses across Asia have temporarily withdrawn spot petrochemical price lists, opting to reassess near-term supply exposure before issuing fresh indications. The pause underscores mounting uncertainty over cargo availability and replacement costs.

Should disruptions persist, buyers are expected to pivot toward alternative Middle Eastern and Asian origins. However, while some producers may be able to lift operating rates, spare capacity across the region remains limited and unlikely to fully offset Middle Eastern shortfalls in the near term — particularly for methanol and commodity polyolefins.

The immediate market trajectory will hinge on the duration of the Strait disruption. A prolonged closure would not only inflate feedstock and freight costs but also trigger a sharper repricing of Asian petrochemical balances, shifting the region from post-holiday recalibration to geopolitical risk management almost overnight.
