Inventory build deepens caution as buyers bet on demand restraint, analysts flag buffer stock dynamics

China’s polyolefin market is facing a widening divide between cautious buyers and strategically positioned producers. The latest stock build has deepened downstream hesitation, with many buyers holding back on expectations that demand restraint could eventually weigh on prices and signal a near-term ceiling. Combined PP and PE inventories held by CNPC and Sinopec are now approaching the one-million-ton mark, reinforcing the sense of a market increasingly saturated at the top end.

Industry analysts, however, offer a more measured interpretation, suggesting the inventory rise may reflect precautionary stockpiling rather than a true surge in available supply. In that context, the build does not translate directly into selling pressure, particularly as Chinese producers continue to hold leverage over a region where overall availability remains tight. The result is a market caught between bearish expectations and structural supply control, where demand restraint alone may not be sufficient to force a meaningful correction.

Domestic producers have maintained the upward bias, lifting offers to new highs, while import prices remain volatile and less directional. Seasonal summer consumption is offering a degree of support, with beverage converters keeping operating rates steady through the peak demand period and helping to cushion elevated pricing.
