China PET resin prices push past a key psychological threshold as crude-led costs outrun demand

Chinese PET bottle resin prices extended their climb in the week to 24 July, with export and domestic offers both moving firmly higher on the back of a sharp upstream rally across crude, PX, and PTA. Producers repriced aggressively to protect margins, even as downstream buyers held back and limited purchases to immediate needs.

Fresh capacity additions from newly commissioned plants added to available supply, tempering some of the upward momentum. The market remains almost entirely driven by upstream cost pressure rather than genuine consumption strength.

Crude has since fallen, and if the current trajectory continues, PET bottle prices could reverse course for the first time in nearly a month.

STATISTICS ·  CHINA

China's PP and PE trades on a stabilization path as war-driven disruptions wear off

China's PP output fell in June, with a large share of plant capacity still offline and production down sharply year-on-year, while export volumes eased from their earlier peak as regional supply conditions normalized and overseas buyers worked through inventory built up during the crisis. PE followed a similar path, with domestic output held steady, imports falling to a multi-year low.

Across both markets, the war-driven distortions that had drastically shifted trade patterns earlier in the year are steadily fading, giving way to a slower, more organic rebalancing.
