According to market sources, a fire broke out at one of the naphtha tanks belonging to Map Ta Phut Olefins Co – a subsidiary of SCG Chemical in Thailand on 26 October 2021, injured several on the site.

The tank was emptied at the time of the incident as the complex has been offline for routine maintenance, which reduced the damage substantially.

A source close to the producer informed that the incident would only generate a minor impact on its operations as the maintenance shutdown duration has been extended for another 30 days, of which inspections would be carried out the ensure safety before restarting. Besides, Map Ta Phut Olefins has three other naphtha tanks on the site, which would resume normal operations once the overhaul is completed.

Map Ta Phut Olefins performed debottlenecking at its complex earlier this year, boosting ethylene output to 1.3 million tons per annum and propylene to 850,000 tons per annum.
