According to media reports, an explosion occurred at Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co during the early hours on Saturday, 18 June 2022, killing at least one.

The incident took place at the No. 2 monoethylene-glycol (MEG) plant that produces 380,000 tons/year; however, relevant authorities are investigating the cause of the event. Monoethylene-glycol (MEG) is a primary feedstock in producing PET bottle, polyester fibres, and antifreeze.

The producer triggered an emergency shutdown at all other petrochemical units at the same location as a safety measure, which a representative from the company said, ‘will not significantly affect the market.’ These units would be able to restart operations once the company completed safety inspections.
