The US commercial crude inventories resumed rising last week, adding 1.6 million barrels despite higher operating rates among refineries in the country, according to the Energy Information Administration.
At 480.1 million barrels, the stock levels are 7% above the five-year average at this time of year.
US refineries operated at 88.2% of their operable capacity during the week, up from 86% the week before.
The total motor gasoline stocks, on the other hand, decreased by 2.1 million barrels to 236 million barrels, mostly due to a draw in finished gasoline stocks as distillate fuel inventories remained unchanged.
