Thailand’s SCG Chemicals and Brazil’s Braskem have partnered in a joint venture, named Braskem Siam Company Limited to create sugar cane-based bio-ethylene from bio-ethanol dehydration, which will then be used to produce bio-based polyethylene (PE).

The project is designed to produce 200,00 tons/year of bio-ethylene.

Once built, the project will be Braskem’s first of its kind outside of Brazil.

As part of the deal, Braskem will contribute the EtE EverGreen technology along with operational experience in the ethanol dehydration process and the I’m Green brand strength in key global markets. On the other hand, SCG Chemicals will offer expert know-how on high-quality polyethylene grades and a wide market reach in Southeast Asia.

The project, however, is subjected to clearance from the relevant anti-trust authorities and final investment decision by the partners.

Roberto Bischoff, CEO of Braskem added that the goal of the partnership is to produce around 1 million tons of green products by 2030, essentially making the use of fossil feedstock void to lower the carbon footprint of the polyolefins sector.
