Danish shipping giant Maersk has announced its intention to recommence shipping operations through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. This decision comes in the wake of an international military operation aimed at preventing attacks on commercial ships by  Houthi rebels.

The move follows a number of shipping lines pausing shipments through the Red Sea due to security concerns. German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd decided on Wednesday that its vessels would continue to take the Cape of Good Hope route as the situation in the Red Sea is still too dangerous.

The Red Sea, a critical passage for oil, liquefied natural gas shipments, and consumer goods, faces ongoing risks. Maersk acknowledges these risks but is taking steps to address them by implementing security measures. The company intends to permit vessels to transit the Red Sea both eastbound and westbound.

The international naval operation, Operation Prosperity Guardian, was initiated by the US to safeguard ships in the region.
