Indian state-controlled refiner Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) is set to construct a 400,000 tons/year polypropylene (PP) plant at its Kochi refining complex in Kerala. With an estimated cost of 50.44 billion rupees ($606 million), the project aims to meet the rising demand for petrochemical products in India.

The refinery's existing 500,000 tons/year propylene production will feed into the new PP unit, supporting downstream industries for products like packaging film, containers, and homeware. While no construction start date was provided, the project is expected to be completed in approximately 46 months.

BPCL had earlier abandoned a polyols project in 2022 but announced plans for an ethylene cracker project in May 2023, part of a broader Rs490 billion investment in its Bina refinery with production slated for the fiscal year 2027-2028.
