India to implement Indian Standard on PP and PVC in August
Both local and international PP and PVC suppliers, who wish to sell their cargoes to India, have 180 days to submit their applications to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)
In a notification published in the Gazette of India, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers announced the implementation of a Quality Control Order on PVC and PP starting 25 August 2024.
Similar to the PE and EVA sectors, both local and international PP and PVC suppliers, who wish to sell their cargoes to India, have 180 days to submit their applications to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to obtain certification and the standard mark to be printed on the packaging. Without the quality certification and the standard mark, cargo might not be allowed to pass customs.
On 05 January 2024, the Indian government officially enforced the B.I.S regulation on all HDPE cargoes while setting exemptions to several grades including LDPE and LLDPE film.
Sharing their experiences in applying for the B.I.S., several international PE producers cited multiple challenges including delays and complicated processes. Sources expect similar hurdles the PP and PVC sectors might face this time.
