The Indonesian government is considering the imposition of up to a 200% duty on certain goods imported from China, aiming to protect local industries, according to recent media reports. The Trade Security Committee is currently conducting a study to evaluate the potential implementation of the Safeguard Measures Import Duty (BMTP).

Indonesia’s Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan, as quoted by Antara News Agency, stated, “The trade war has caused an oversupply in China as their products faced rejection by Western countries, forcing them to redirect their exports to other markets like Indonesia.”

The proposed tariff measures come in response to a spate of local textile company closures and layoffs, prompting calls for more robust policies to shield domestic industries from the influx of Chinese-made goods.

While authorities have not yet specified which categories of imported products will be affected, textiles and ceramics are currently under close scrutiny by the Indonesian Trade Security Committee (KPPI).
