According to media reports, Indonesian Environment Ministry has launched a nationwide campaign to reduce the use of plastic bags on Sunday (21 Feb) in an effort to combat waste management problems with limited landfills. Under the Ministry’s guideline, retailers in the country should charge consumers between Rp200 and Rp5,000 ($0.015-0.37) for each plastic bag used. The campaign is still under the trial period and not officially legislated yet, however, 23 cities and regions in the country have started charging for plastic bags.

Indonesia is the world’s second-biggest user of plastic bags after China, with around 9.8 billion plastic bags used in the country each year. The guideline is likely to affect the plastic bags manufacturers and more comments from players in this sector will be reported shortly.
