Thailand's PTT mulling development of new naphtha cracker

According to a media report, PTT Global Chemical Plc (PTTGC) is planning to construct a brand new naphtha cracker to convert the surplus of naphtha from its oil refinery to olefins. The project is expected to come online by 2020 and the company aims to have a final list of contractors by this year’s end.
Based in Map Ta Phut, the project name Retrofit will include a steam cracker to produce 500,000 ton/year of ethylene and 261,000 ton/year of propylene. In order to achieve this capacity, the company requires some 1.5 million tons of naphtha as feed per year. At the moment, PTTGC produces 2 million ton/year of surplus naphtha from its oil refineries, 80% of which is sold to Siam Cement Plc, while the remaining 20% is exported.
Once the project is completed, PTTGC’s ethylene production will increase to 2.8 million ton/year, and its propylene production will jump to 800,000 ton/year, boosting its standing in the global petrochemical industry.
