A fire broke out at Philippines’ JG Summit plant

According to media reports, a fire broke out at JG Summit Petrochemical plant at around 9.30 PM on 26 September 2020. The fire has been brought under control in a couple of hours.

An unconfirmed report suggested that the fire started at a containment basin near the pier, away from the main manufacturing site. The company is currently investigating the cause of the incident while assessing the potential impact on the plant.

JG Summit is currently carrying out an expansion project at its petrochemical complex at the Batangas City, Philippines, which include: 

1.    Increase the capacity of the naphtha cracker to 480,000 tons/year of ethylene and 240,000 tons/year of propylene 

2.    Increase the output of the PP unit to 300,000 tons/year 

3.    A new butadiene extraction unit with an annual capacity of 70,000 tons/year 

4.    A new 250,000 tons/year standalone bimodal HDPE unit

The project is scheduled to complete by Q4 – 2020. 

At the moment, JG Summit produces 320,000 tons/year of HDPE and LLDPE and 190,000 tons/year of PP.
