China’s PE market heads into heaviest maintenance quarter as new capacity hits delays

China’s PE market is heading into its heaviest maintenance quarter of 2026, with production losses projected to exceed 500,000 tons in the final three months of the year. Delays to several major petrochemical projects are set to compound the supply squeeze, keeping additional volumes out of the market and tightening availability against earlier expectations.

The supply squeeze comes amid weak downstream demand and persistent resistance to higher resin prices. Producers may find it difficult to translate tighter availability into sustained price gains while buyers remain cautious about fresh purchases.

With much of the idled capacity scheduled to return towards year-end and delayed projects potentially starting up into early 2027, the question lingering in the market is whether tightening availability will prompt buyers to replenish stocks ahead of the Lunar New Year, or whether weak downstream demand will continue to cap price gains.

Indonesian major lifts PE for second time this week as PP takes a breather

An Indonesian major extended its PE price rally with a second increase this week, raising all PE grades while holding PP prices steady after Monday’s steep hikes. Festive-season buying and tighter local availability supported the latest adjustment, particularly for LLDPE film.

With November indent allocations already sold out, December-arrival offers have climbed to levels buyers consider uncompetitive, prompting some to secure domestic material before the latest hike. However, the producer’s continued price increases are now testing converters’ willingness to accept higher costs.
