Indonesia polyolefin rally faces downstream resistance after fourth consecutive hike

Indonesia’s polyolefin market extended its rally on 26 October as a major domestic producer raised prices for the fourth time in 10 days, lifting offers by up to 1.1 million/ton ($61/ton). Record-high propylene levels, firmer crude oil and limited prompt availability continued to support sellers, but repeated hikes have left converters struggling to pass higher raw material costs on to customers.

The distribution channel tracked the upward trend, although buying interest remained cautious as converters sought acceptance of further finished-product price increases. Some smaller buyers with limited stocks were compelled to replenish at higher prices, while others continued to delay purchases.

With upstream costs still climbing, the key question is whether downstream customers will accept another round of price increases or force converters to curb production.

SCG maintenance to keep Thai polyolefin exports constrained through year-end

Thailand’s Siam Cement Group (SCG) will shut its Map Ta Phut Olefins Co. (MOC) cracker for scheduled maintenance within the final quarter, with operations expected to restart before the new year. The shutdown comes as the producer continues to navigate feedstock disruptions and elevated logistics costs stemming from instability in the Middle East.

SCG has been adjusting its maintenance schedule and prioritising domestic Thai demand and high-value-added (HVA) products amid uncertain feedstock availability. The latest shutdown could further limit monomer availability for its downstream polyolefin units, keeping standard-grade PP and PE export allocations tight as the producer balances domestic commitments against specialty product demand.
