Taiwanese producer triggers fresh PVC downcycle across Asia
Asia’s PVC market is slipping into a deeper demand-led correction as a major Taiwanese producer signals a decisive downward repricing cycle for ethylene-based PVC, particularly into India. The move reflects more than a tactical adjustment. Comfortable inventories across the region, leading to sluggish downstream demand and manufacturing demand, are eroding buyers’ urgency and forcing producers to compete more aggressively to clear lengthening positions.
The weakness is being reinforced by deteriorating upstream economics, with ethylene values extending losses for a seventh consecutive week and steadily compressing PVC cost support. That combination of soft demand and falling feedstock costs is accelerating bearish sentiment across the chain, leaving converters comfortable delaying purchases while sellers face mounting pressure to defend volumes.

Freight inflation to Latin America could deepen pressure on Asian polymer markets
Freight markets are re-emerging as a major pressure point for Chinese exporters, with container rates to South America rising by approximately 30-60% from the previous month per 40-foot container depending on destination and vessel availability. The sharp escalation is rapidly inflating delivered costs across regional supply chains, squeezing arbitrage margins and undermining the competitiveness of Chinese cargoes into already fragile overseas markets.
The logistics shock comes at a particularly difficult moment for traders, as softer end-market demand across Asia is already limiting buyers’ willingness to absorb higher replacement costs. Exporters are increasingly caught between weakening pricing power and surging freight exposure, forcing some market participants to scale back offers or delay forward sales altogether.
