TODAY’S DEVELOPMENTS
POLYETHYLENE · MALAYSIA
Malaysia’s PE suppliers continue to slash prices into the new week, buyers stay picky
Malaysia’s PE market extended its retreat this week as comfortable converter inventories, rising import availability and weak downstream demand kept buyers firmly in control. A major domestic producer deepened its October discounts, cutting HDPE and LLDPE film prices across all volume brackets and reinforcing the market’s downward reset.
Distributors are now following suit, with one trader cutting Kerteh-produced HDPE film by MYR 300/ton as buyers increasingly resist higher offers. Chinese cargoes are also expected to add further pressure as import availability improves, leaving sellers with fewer levers to defend prices.
Yet the market is not completely devoid of buying interest. A converter recently returned for HDPE film after stocks ran low, showing that purchases can still emerge when inventories force the issue and the price is right. The bigger question for October is whether deeper discounts can finally tempt buyers into a broader replenishment cycle, or simply push the market into another round of price discovery.

PET BOTTLE · INDONESIA
Indonesia PET buyers keep powder dry ahead of China reopening
Indonesia’s PET bottle market held at an elevated ceiling this week, but trading momentum was largely lacking as buyers waited for China’s return from Golden Week. Prompt-shipment material edged higher amid tight availability, after late-September import indications were deemed unworkable.
The contrast is sharper in the forward market, where November-shipment offers held broadly steady but failed to attract converter interest. Buyers are increasingly betting that China’s post-holiday reopening will bring fresh offers and greater supply, giving them little reason to commit now.
For now, converters appear content to wait. Lower-cost material booked earlier is keeping operations covered into November, while softer downstream orders have further reduced the urgency to replenish. The key test next week is whether China’s reopening validates that patience and puts the current prompt premium under pressure.
