TODAY’S DEVELOPMENTS
POLYMERS · INDONESIA
Indonesia opens a duty-free window for selected plastic raw materials
Indonesia has enacted its long-anticipated tariff exemptions for selected plastic raw materials, but the relief stops short of the country’s core polyolefin grades. While selected PE grades gain temporary duty-free access, other mainstream grades remain subject to import duties.
The six-month measure offers targeted relief rather than a broad reduction in polymer import costs. Its narrow product coverage leaves a key question for buyers: how much practical benefit can the exemptions deliver?
Importers must also navigate strict customs classification requirements, with eligibility tied to specific eight-digit tariff codes and supporting origin documents. Misclassification risks could erode the savings, leaving the regulation’s commercial impact dependent on which grades qualify and whether shipments meet the documentation requirements.

PET BOTTLE · CHINA
China PET market goes into the post-Golden Week with a big test
The Chinese PET bottle market reopened last week with a sharp cost-driven rally, but buyers were adamant and refused to chase. The futures contracts had surged beyond their March-April peaks, pushing domestic and export offers higher, yet converters remain wary of buying near levels that previously marked the market ceiling.
The standoff is tightening as producers regain operating capacity while seasonal demand begins to soften. With buyers watching crude oil and weighing the risk of a correction, firmer replacement costs have yet to translate into stronger procurement.
The next test is whether sustained upstream strength can force buyers back into the market, or whether recovering supply and winter demand weakness will stall the rally before sellers can secure further gains.
