TODAY’S DEVELOPMENTS

POLYVINYL CHLORIDE · CHINA

China PVC rebound gains traction as production cuts tighten supply, but winter demand looms

China’s PVC market regained ground in the week to 23 October as rising production cuts has continued to restricting supply, while Brent surged past $113/barrel. Domestic and export prices strengthened, while monitored warehouse inventories fell below 870,000 tons for the first time in more than a year.

However, the recovery remains largely supply-driven, with squeezed producer margins prompting further output curtailments rather than a meaningful improvement in consumption. Buyers have returned for replenishment, but persistently weak property-sector activity continues to weigh on downstream demand. With additional plant shutdowns approaching in November, producers may retain greater control over availability.

Yet, as northern China heads into its winter construction slowdown, market participants are questioning how much further can PVC prices climb before demand resistance sets in.

STATISTICS · CHINA

China PP exports gain ground across Southeast Asia as domestic output falls

China’s PP exports climbed sharply in September despite logistical disruptions at eastern and southern ports, with homo-PP shipments leading the advance. Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia all increased their intake of Chinese material from a year earlier, signalling a broader shift in regional trade flows as buyers sought alternative supplies.

The export push coincided with a monthly dip in PP domestic production as elevated feedstock costs squeezed producer margins. Yet China’s trade position is becoming more complex, with imports also rebounding to their highest level since March as overseas material regained ground in the domestic market.

Can Chinese exporters maintain their regional gains if competing suppliers restore production and domestic buyers continue drawing in imported material?
