Chinese HDPE export offers retreat as crude slide unsettles Southeast Asian buyers

A major Chinese producer has cut HDPE film and blow moulding export offers across Southeast Asia and other regional markets, following a sharp correction in crude oil and DCE futures. However, market participants view the adjustment as a knee-jerk response to weaker upstream sentiment rather than evidence that polyethylene prices have peaked.

The crude slide has already rattled buying confidence, with an Indonesian HDPE bag converter reporting that a customer cancelled an existing purchase order after oil fell below $100/barrel. Demand was already fragile, with local bag manufacturers having reduced November operating rates.

China PET supply tightness set to ease as major restarts approach

Chinese PET prices are holding for now, but the floor is built on supply constraints rather than demand strength and that distinction is becoming harder to ignore. Export offers stayed firm through the week as producers held price discipline against manageable prompt inventories. But demand offered little support: overseas buyers stayed on the sidelines, freight costs remained elevated, and a softening crude complex gave importers reason to wait rather than restock.

Domestically, ongoing plant maintenance kept prompt availability tight and underpinned prices. That tightness, however, could prove temporary. A cluster of idled units is due back online around mid-November, with new capacity additions arriving in parallel — returning a substantial volume of supply to the market at precisely the moment feedstock costs are weakening and export channels remain largely closed.

China PET holds steady across export and local markets, though upstream rout and imminent restarts cloud outlook
