Global container lanes diverged sharply in the week to 13 October 2026, as pre-tender carrier rate hikes lifted Mediterranean pricing whilst fading post-Golden Week volumes initiated a Transpacific retreat.

According to the Freightos Baltic Index (FBX), Asia–Mediterranean spot rates jumped 7% to $3,804/FEU, whilst Asia–Northern Europe and Asia–US East Coast held flat at $3,260/FEU and $9,606/FEU, respectively. Asia–US West Coast shed 2% to $8,149/FEU, marking the first crack in transpacific peak pricing.

The Mediterranean rally reflects carrier positioning ahead of 2027 annual contract tenders. Liners are deploying October General Rate Increases to anchor negotiation baselines, exploiting sentiment after Houthi missile strikes on Riyadh airport renewed regional escalation risks. Although carriers have steadily expanded Red Sea transits since June, spot rates remain 70% above year-ago levels, reinforced by lingering berth congestion across Northern Europe and the Far East.

Shippers, however, are resisting current rate lock-ins, anticipating substantial softening in 2027 as heavy newbuild deliveries and expanded Suez routing inflate vessel supply.

Transpacific resilience is simultaneously waning as US peak-season demand exhausts itself. National Retail Federation projections indicate an 11% month-on-month drop in November US inbound volumes, capping full-year container growth at a modest 1.4% over 2025 despite nearing 2021 records. With holiday replenishment cycles concluding, transpacific spot rates face persistent downward drift until pre-Lunar New Year restocking surfaces in late December.
